Setting Up & Maintaining Your Culture

Container: A shallow tray with a thin layer of dechlorinated water works best — worms form a dense mat and need surface area, not depth.

Temperature: Keep cool, ideally 60–72°F (16–22°C). Heat is the fastest way to crash a culture.

Water & Oxygen: Use dechlorinated water with gentle aeration or frequent partial water changes. Tubifex need clean, oxygenated water and foul quickly if neglected.

Feeding the Culture: Offer small amounts of finely ground flake, sinking pellets, or blanched vegetable matter. Underfeed rather than overfeed — excess food fouls the water and kills worms.

Harvesting: Pinch off a portion, rinse it thoroughly under dechlorinated water, and feed. Always rinse before offering to your fish.
Feeding Tubifex to Your Fish
Rinse a small clump of worms thoroughly, then offer it directly or in a worm feeder. Fish take tubifex eagerly, so feed modest amounts they clear within a few minutes.
