Angelfish Color Morphs Compared: Premium Koi vs Orange Marble vs Black Splash vs Philippine Blue

Side-by-side comparison of the four most popular angelfish color morphs: Premium Koi, Orange Marble, Black Splash, Philippine Blue. Which to choose for your tank.

If you have looked at angelfish online recently, you have run into the same problem every other hobbyist runs into: there are dozens of color morphs, hundreds of variant names, and most listings show one perfect fish with no context for whether you should pick it. Should you go for the bold red of a Premium Koi? The intricate pattern of an Orange Marble? The understated graphic of a Black Splash? The cool electric tones of a Philippine Blue?

The honest answer is that all of these are the same species — Pterophyllum scalare — with the same care needs, same temperament, same lifespan, same diet. The differences are pattern, color, contrast, and visual impact. This guide compares the four most popular line-bred color morphs sold at Amazoniafish and helps you pick the one that matches your tank, lighting, aquascape, and aesthetic preferences.

For the underlying biology of the genus, see the Wikipedia entry on Pterophyllum and the FishBase species page for Pterophyllum scalare.

Premium Koi (Red Devil) Angelfish

The Premium Koi line concentrates orange-red into a clean cap above the eyes, with a clean white body and shimmering platinum highlights. Stress and adolescence intensify the red; mature adults develop deep crimson hoods. The pattern is high-impact, high-contrast, and reads boldly across a tank from any angle.

Pick the Premium Koi if: you want maximum visual impact, your tank is large enough to be seen across a room, and you like a fish that looks like a single brushstroke of red against white. They are also our most reliably available domestic angelfish, with the deepest gene pool, so quality is consistent shipment to shipment.

Orange Marble Angelfish

The Orange Marble distributes warm citrus-orange across a black-and-silver mosaic. No two fish are identical — the marble pattern produces an irregular splotchy distribution that, with the orange overlay, reads like moving stained glass. The visual interest is in the complexity rather than a single bold focal point.

Pick the Orange Marble if: you appreciate intricate pattern over single-color impact, you like the fact that every fish is genetically a one-off, and you want a morph that rewards close-up viewing as much as a glance across the room. They show best with light substrate (cream sand, pea gravel) where the black-on-white reads sharply.

Black Splash Angelfish

The Black Splash is the marble pattern dialed down. Where a regular marble distributes black across the whole body, the Splash concentrates black into one to three discrete patches against a clean platinum-white background. The effect is graphic, modern, almost ink-on-paper minimalist.

Pick the Black Splash if: you favor bold contrast over warm color, you like a clean architectural look, and your aquascape uses light substrate and minimal decor. They are also a strong choice for tanks where the angel is the visual anchor — the high-contrast pattern catches the eye in a way warm-toned morphs sometimes do not in heavily planted setups.

Philippine Blue Angelfish

The Philippine Blue is the only one of these morphs where the color is structural rather than pigment-based. Iridophore cells in the dermis scatter light to produce cool-toned, almost metallic blue across the flanks. The intensity shifts dramatically with viewing angle and lighting — they look spectacular under daylight LEDs, electric under blue actinic lighting, and pale under warm yellow bulbs.

Pick the Philippine Blue if: you want cool tones in the tank rather than warm, you have or are willing to install good full-spectrum LED lighting, you prefer dark substrate (black sand) for contrast, and you appreciate fish that change visual character as you move around the tank. They are also our most affordable show-quality angelfish, which makes them a strong starter morph for keepers new to higher-grade angels.

Mixing Morphs in One Tank

All four morphs are Pterophyllum scalare. They get along the same way any group of domestic angels gets along — six juveniles in a 75–90 gallon tank, pairs form naturally, the rest establish a peaceful pecking order. There is no genetic or behavioral incompatibility between morphs, and crossing them is straightforward but produces unpredictable offspring patterns due to how the marble, koi, splash, and PB genes segregate.

For mixed-morph display tanks, common combinations are:

  • Premium Koi + Orange Marble + Black Splash — warm-tone harmony with a black accent.
  • Philippine Blue + Black Splash — cool-tone display with dramatic black-and-blue contrast.
  • All four together — a “color sampler” tank, particularly visually interesting in larger 90–125 gallon setups.

Where the Wild Forms Fit

Beyond domestic line-bred morphs, Amazoniafish also imports wild-caught locality forms — Santa Isabel scalare from the middle Rio Negro, São Gabriel, Rio Iniridae, and others. These are a different commitment: blackwater chemistry, longer acclimation periods, advanced care. They are not interchangeable with the domestic morphs in this guide. If you are interested in stepping up from line-bred angels to true wild fish, see our Santa Isabel Angelfish Care Guide.
