The parent stock came from the blackwater stretch of the Rio Negro around Santa Isabel do Rio Negro in Amazonas, Brazil, and what we offer here is the first aquarium-raised generation from that line. Mature fish carry a scatter of carmine and pearl-white spots across a golden nape and shoulder, a marking that deepens with age and shows strongest on dominant adults. The finnage is pure wild type: long trailing ventral filaments and finely striated dorsal and anal fins, with no veil or marble genes anywhere in the background. Being tank-bred, these fish take prepared food from day one and handle ordinary tap water far better than freshly imported wild scalare.

• True Santa Isabel bloodline, bred in our own tanks: Our breeders came from the middle Rio Negro near Santa Isabel do Rio Negro. This is the F1 generation, so the fish carry the wild phenotype while having spent their whole life in aquarium water.

• Red and pearl spotting over a golden nape: Adults develop carmine spots mixed with iridescent white flecks across the shoulder and upper flank, set against an amber to gold body with the classic dark vertical bars behind.

• Wild-type finnage, nothing line-bred: Long trailing ventral filaments and finely striated dorsal, anal and caudal fins, exactly as in the wild population. No veil, marble or koi genetics are involved.

• Easier to settle than a wild import: Tank-bred fish skip the long, delicate acclimation that wild Rio Negro angelfish need. They eat prepared food from the start and tolerate a much wider pH range.

• What a Small actually looks like on arrival: The photographs on this page show grown, fully coloured adults from our breeding tank. A Small is a juvenile, and the red spotting fills in as it matures, so expect the adult look at eight to twelve months rather than on day one.

• Tank Size: A 30 gallon tank suits a pair. Plan on 55 gallons or more for a group of five or six. Water depth matters more than floor space for angelfish, so look for at least 18 inches of height.

• Water Temperature: 75–84°F (24–29°C). Keep towards the upper end while they are growing out.

• pH Range: 6.0–7.5, hardness 5–13 dH. Soft and slightly acidic is closest to the Rio Negro, but F1 fish settle into moderately hard tap water without trouble.

• Diet: Omnivore with a clear preference for meaty foods. Rotate frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp with a quality granule or flake. Our own stock is raised on Discus Hobby granules alongside frozen food.

• Tank Mates: Peaceful with tetras large enough not to be eaten, corydoras, dwarf cichlids and other South American community fish. Avoid fin nippers, and avoid anything small enough to fit in an adult angelfish mouth, neon tetras included.
